# Excel format for uploading grades

**What is the correct file format for uploading marks from Excel to avoid errors?**

There isn't an Excel format that you can create manually. The best way is to follow these steps:

1. [Download](/v1/docs/work-offline-with-grades) the Gradebook file.

Tip

Select only the columns that you want to update/amend to download.

1. Copy the downloaded Excel file to a place on your computer where you will be able to access it from in the future.
2. Open the Excel file.
3. Add/amend the grades in the applicable gradable item column.

Important step for success

1. **SAVE the file**. Do not SAVE AS - that will break your upload file!
