# Planning engaging learning activities

**Active learning** is generally defined as any **instructional method that engages students in the learning process**. In short, active learning requires students to **do meaningful learning activities and think about what they are doing**.

**Active learning** is when a student **retrieves** a concept and **relates** it to known information.

This does not happen by chance – we have to be intentional and design the courses and activities as such that the students will be able to retrieve a concept and relate it to known information.
